What it doesn't say is: 2 hair stylists, 2 make up people, 2 prop stylists, 2 food stylists, 3 editors, 1 photographer, 1 photo tech, 20+ extras, 20 lanterns, 25 platters, 20+ utensils, 20+ pots and pans, 12 directors chairs, 1 farm table, 1 pine bench, 15+ glass compotes, 4+ peach baskets, 30+ glasses, 30+ plates, 12 napkins, 10+ dish towels, 30+ votives and one GIANT Uhaul (I'm sure I'm forgetting something but you get the picture). Crazy right? No one would really believe what goes on behind the scenes so I thought I would show you the pretty pictures from the 10 page spread and then one of my own during set up. It actually looks tidy but the chaos hadn't really started.

MY FIRST NATIONAL COVER!!! I'm a little excited can you tell, for a couple of reasons. First of all I loved this house, I scouted it for another big homes magazine and they passed on it. I wasn't going to give up because I knew it was special so I sent it to one of my favorite editors at Southern Living and they scooped it up immediately. I can't help but wonder what the other magazine thought when they saw it on the cover. Anyway, you win some you loose some. I was also tickled to know that Southern Living doesn't have a lot of homes on their covers instead they often opt for food of the sweet variety (can you blame them?).

I've neglected the blog for some time now. Mostly because I've been super busy but really great stuff has been happening so I thought I should get you caught up. I styled this feature for Southern Living last summer and it appeared in the May issue of Southern Living (click here to read the article). It was an amazing house for so many reasons. I loved meeting the home owners, spending time getting to know all about their businesses (she is an interior designer and he is an architect, a winning combo if you ask me).

I have more to come but I will try to pace it out over a few days. I don't want to seem like a binge blogger (nothing for ages and then loads of posts).

I had the pleasure of helping make some magic happen for the sweetest couple last week. They were eloping and if you know anything about me, you know that I wanted it to be the most special moment for the two of them. Details, details, details. No courthouse with ugly carpet and fluorescent lights for this adorable duo. You really can’t beat our beautiful oak trees in Savannah or the city as a back drop for pictures (even if it rained).

Yes I’m crazy but look at these people, wouldn’t you do the same, SOOOO cute!

They hired me on as a development and business consultant for their venture and I was happy to be a part of it. Real Wedding ~ Scottee and Jim

Scottee and Jim chose Savannah, GA for their intimate Southern soiree filled with beautiful vintage details and designed in rich color palette by event designer Elizabeth Demos. Photographer Donna Von Bruening of DVB Photographers was on hand to capture the day. Scottee looked gorgeous in her chic Carolina Herrera gown with fitted bodice and bubbled tier skirt tied with black and ivory striped ribbon. She wore her hair up with braids pulling her dark locks away from her face and adding a pretty pair of crystal beaded earrings, while Jim kept it simple in a classic fitted black suit and tie with vintage inspired boutonniere made of pheasant, black and Bordeaux colored feathers. Situated in the English-inspired parterre garden of the historic Owen-Thomas House close family and friends gathered for the intimate ceremony. Arrangements of white and yellow blooms decorated the space and set on the table where a quaint little seating area with iron benches was nestled in the gardens. Scottee and Jim exchanged vows flanked by two trees and in front of the small reflecting fountain situated in the center of the gardens.

After a few celebratory drinks of Kentucky bourbon served out of vintage silver rimmed glassware the celebration continued at The Olde Pink House for the dinner reception. Savannah's only 18th century mansion provided the perfect venue for the couple's decadent reception of elegant Southern cuisine. The rich event palette and vintage details of the reception worked seamlessly with the already preexisting decor of The Old Pink House. Guest tables were situated around the room and set by the fireplace where tall gold fluted vases held heart shaped wreaths made from small white blooms and vines. A variety of rich purple linens dressed the tables accented with gold chivari chairs. Scottee and Jim's table featured a beautiful lilac embroidered and eyelet base linen set with a deep aubergine velvet overlay trimmed in gold embroidery and tassels. Florist Harvey Designs created stunning centerpieces of mixed white and purple blooms ranging from a light wisteria hue to dark indigo all set in vintage gold vessels on antique mirror trays. Aged mercury votives adorned the tabletops adding a warm glow to the intimate dinner reception. It’s official, I just signed on with San Francisco based Publisher Chronicle Books to produce my first book!!!!!! Chronicle is my all time favorite publisher. I’m especially excited to have their gifted art directors, graphic designers and editors on my team. Scheduled for release in Fall 2012.

So….if you are a couple looking to hire a very creative planner for your wedding, are getting married before June 2011 and would entertain the possiblity of being featured in my book we should chat.

If you have been reading my blog for a long time you will know that I'm a big fan of Matthew Mead. In the styling world he is a super star and I was honored to be asked to contribute to his spectacular new magazine Holiday.

I've been anxiously awaiting my issue in the mail and it came today. Matthew included it in a package that held the table top crepe paper Christmas trees I created for the Yule Blog feature. I was so excited to see the magazine I forgot to unpack my trees (if you have a copy they are on page 9, number 11). They are still in my studio and the magazine sits here in my lap with many, many pages marked with post it notes.

cookbook release

This week marks the launch of Martha Nesbit’s cookbook Savannah Celebrations. I was honored Martha selected me as the photo stylist on this project (my first cookbook ever). It is always nice to see the final product after all the hours of work, schlepping and countless lists become a distant memory. These are some of my favorite pictures from the project. More often than not publishers select images that are my least favorite, but I’m no publisher I’m just a girl that loves to make pretty pictures.

Life as a freelance photo stylist/event designer/part time antique dealer has been a big adjustment. In the shop I knew what to expect from my schedule. I knew the hours and approximately knew the in and out of the $$$. So my new jobs come with the risk of not knowing when the next job will come, when the invoices will be paid, how to manage the income over time. I might have 3-4 jobs in one month and then nothing for a month. I love routine so you can imagine the transition has not been easy. I do love the adventure though and I've managed to stay busy (which should explain the lack of blogging).

This is the first house I styled for Southern Living (last December) and I have 2 features in the November issue too. I just completed 2 other projects for SL for next summer. Locally Savannah Magazine and Savannah Weddings has kept me busy as well. I will post things as they appear in print so you can see my handy work.

I'm one of 44 vendors that occupy the space so there is something for everyone. My booth number is #37. I've managed to cram a lot of things into a small amount of space. long time no see

I know it has been ages since I posted anything. I sit here in my new studio amongst piles (organized piles, I promise) of stuff and that is just what it is now STUFF. Stuff to go to the house, stuff to go to my little antique mall booth, stuff to be donated, stuff to be auctioned, stuff to be put in my little studio space.....STUFF. I mean really why do I have 15 (and counting) extension cords? Why do I feel the need to hoard vintage store display pieces? Why do I have SO many papers? I have filled just about every giant blue IKEA bag I have and countless boxes.

In between the packing, moving and cleaning the shop I meet with brides, magazine editors and photographers (I don't want you to think I've been sitting around). In fact I recently completed my first job photo styling a book. A cookbook for Martha Nesbit (local celeb chef) that is expected to come out in the fall. It was an amazing experience. I also contributed an article to the new online magazine Southern Flourish (expected to launch in a week), I was interviewed by Southern Living for a June article about weddings in Savannah. I was an assistant on a photo shoot for Quilt Magazine and now they've asked me to create some projects for them. I produced a couple of features for Country Living for two spring/summer issues. And if that is not enough I exhibited at Behind the Veil, Savannah's premiere bridal show to showcase my new venture. Fingers crossed this kind of STUFF keeps coming my way because the other STUFF is really overwhelming.

I have some news to share with you today, I have decided to close @home. We have had a good 10 year run but in order to pursue new opportunities with my freelance career and event design it was necessary to make the change. This change will also give me more time with my family, time and space to be creative on a grander scale. I've spent the better part of 20 years in retail. I have garnered a great deal of recognition and have enjoyed the rewards of my hard work but I think now is a great time to re-invent myself. The prospect is both scary and exciting.

I am so grateful for all the good fortune my shop has brought my way and all the lovely people I have met along the way. You have been such an inspiration.

I would like to acknowledge my family and friends, my wonderful staff, loyal customers, sales reps and fellow retailers for all your support over the last 10 years. It has been an amazing journey, thank you for coming along and thank you for believing in me.

When it is all said and done if you are wondering where can you can find me? You can check in on my blog or send me an email for any updates. I will be in a tiny studio where I can meet with brides and work on projects for my editorial clients. I hope to teach some workshops, finish the two book proposals I started over a year ago and I'm bound and determined to get a product development/licensing deal with a manufacturer. I'm also planning to get a couple of spaces in antique malls and host some sort of pop up shop or warehouse sale from time to time (announcements will be on the blog) and if that isn't enough, I will finally have time to concentrate on getting the e-commerce portion of the @home website so I can sell online. So you see I will be very busy, just a different kind of busy.

I'm sure this has come out of left field for many of you but for me, it has been a year in the making. This was not an easy decision. I have loved having a retail store very much. My shop had a winning combination; it is really neat, people love it, I have great stuff, a fantastic location and an outstanding staff and most of all the BEST customers in the world!

Our house was photographed for Country Home magazine a couple of years ago and was slated for a holiday issue before they closed so our story was passed on to one of their Special Interest Publications Christmas Ideas and is on news stands now. I've included some pictures below.

If you are a Christmas Ideas reader looking for the items pictured in the CI story I regret to tell you most of those items have sold but if you are a hunter and gatherer like me check in with your local independent retailers or look online. I've been getting the most calls about the red bottle brush trees on my mantle and they are made by Bethany Lowe Designs. The wreath above my sideboard is from Katie Runnels and the new glass jars are from the Paris Market (old candy jars are mine and are not for sale). The boxwood garland came from The Magnolia Company and the boxwood topiary came from Arcanum in Savannah. As always I sell loads of vintage ornaments at my shop @home and the wrapping paper & ribbon is from my shop as well.

The magazine neglected to source all the lovely people that loaned me things, put up with my frenzied attitude or made things for me. So I hope you patronize their shops too.

Today we've got a double dose of our behind-the-scenes series about Grace and Aaron's wedding. Grace bulked up her standard rentals and enhanced her décor with the help of two great shop owners. Grace: Our wedding wouldn't have been the same without the help and generosity of Paula from Paris Market & Brocante and Liz from @home vintage general. Both women really embody the welcoming spirit of Savannah and were incredibly kind to let us borrow such beautiful vintage and antique pieces.

When I walked into Paula’s store (which I visit religiously each time I’m in Savannah) during wedding planning, I knew that her collection of vintage and antique chandeliers would set the perfect tone for our "secret garden" reception. At first, I think my guests thought the pieces were just for show, but when the sun set and the lights turned, on I watched people admire the soft, romantic light they cast on the reception. People like Paula really helped us have the sort of dream wedding that wouldn't have been possible without the generosity and support of a team of local artists and business owners.

When it comes to Liz from @home, I can't say enough nice things. I’ve known her for a while now, and she's the heart and soul of the Savannah scene for me. Her support of local students, designers, and businesses is incredible. Liz’s store feels like the sort of place you want to move into, so I knew I’d turn to her for help with the wedding. And thankfully, she was kind enough to let me borrow some really key pieces, like the vintage petticoat dryer and the green-tiered plant stand. I think people thought I was a little nutty wanting to use the petticoat dryer for the escort cards, but I loved the way it expanded and thought the miniature clothespins we used to attach the cards was such a fun play on the idea of drying clothes. Liz’s store is always full of unexpected but beautiful items, and I felt really lucky to be able to use a few of them for the big day.

Yeah! The flip house is under contract!!!!! Apparently the owners had 3 offers (all female, first time home buyers). AMAZING, it was only on the market one month. I like to think it was the splendid selections of one such designer (me) that helped get it sold but the truth is the owners and the workman did a terrific job. I'm ready for the next one. I love to spend other people's money. : )

As promised here are the after pictures of the cottage I helped my client makeover. They did all the hard work and heavy lifting. I did the surface selection, paint selection and in general gave them my two cents when they wanted it. It was so much fun and they are a lovely couple so hopefully it will sell quickly and we can do it all over again.

We staged it a little last week so people could envision themselves living there.

With retail skimming the ground these days who in their right mind decides to launch another business? Me. Call me crazy, but after completing the most ambitious wedding I have ever helped put together I said to myself "I can do this, I can really do this." So I placed an ad in Savannah Weddings Magazine and my OH-so talented graphic designer (and shop girl) Meg Sutton is madly putting together a website for my new venture. Event design (& planning). I will share the website once it is up and running but in the meantime if you know anyone getting hitched that might appreciate my services send them my way. A rumor is now reality. For months now I have been hearing all sorts of rumors that Matthew Mead and Ki Nassauer were teaming up to produce a new magazine. In the editorial world we have seen a lot of magazines disappear so the news that this duo were merging their creative minds made me giddy. Not to mention I would love to contribute in any way possible (portfolio on its way soon Ki & Matthew). Flea Market Style will be a newsstand magazine and hopefully if it is successful it will turn into a subscription based publication. The blog should be up by the end of August and the magazine will be released early spring of 2010. YEAH!

I have for years talked myself into purchases (projects) thinking I would have time to get to them or I could make something with them. My sewing days seem to be behind me, and forget reupholstering things myself. Did you say that would look good painted or turned into a mirror.... Can you see where I am going with this post? I love to shop. I find some really cool treasures and yes I am attracted to the "potential" in many objects. For that reason the basement (2,000 sq. ft.) in the store is full of the aforementioned objects. Oh, and I can't forget my obsession with props either (many of which will be available for the first time). And there is the random orphan from the sales floor too. So it is with great pleasure that I invite each and every one of you to attend my first BASEMENT SALE in the hopes that you will relieve me of some of these treasures. * I hope the thought of it conjures up a Filene's Basement sale-like frenzy. I just got word today that Chelsea Cook (a former @home shop gal) just landed the new technical designer position at Betsey Johnson. Chelsea was a customer of mine while she was attending the Savannah College of Art and Design. After she graduated she hung around Savannah working for me and saving money for her big move to NYC. If I sound like a proud mama, I am. All of my girls have gone on to great successes and this just adds to the ongoing list of amazing accomplishments.

I would like to think that Chelsea's wedding dress design for Halligan (and her sweet disposition & love of ruffles) got her the job. Betsey sure hired a winner.

This morning I opened my email to find the most wonderful note from a girl that had visited my shop this past weekend. I sat there sobbing while I read it. I get notes like this from time to time but this one really got me. Maybe because it has been so hard to be a retailer lately. I know I am not the only one. Specialty retailers across the nation are struggling.

We all love what we do. We love our customers. We love being creative. We love that you love us. It fills our hearts and keeps us motivated but we can't take love to the bank. Oh, how I wish I could because I would be a very rich girl.

HI Liz! Oh my goodness! What bliss!! my name is abany - and I visited your store this past weekend, when my girlfriends and I were on a much needed getaway from the grand ole Hotlanta. I must first tell tell you that after a VERY LONG and hot day of wandering through the many various shops along broughton - we found ourselves in front of your store only 10 minutes after the shop closed. with frowns on our faces, we stood there simply stupefied over the beautiful store (and that was just from the outside!), so i was determined to be sure to come back the next day.

after 12 hours and many annoying reminders i'm sure, my friends and I galavanted over to @home...in which I found myself in a heavenly dream of general store glory!! i seriously think that i was in quite a stupor of the beautiful details and the delicate merchandising...my girls thought that i may have died and gone to vintage heaven...so they left me alone to wander in amazement.

i got all tied up in little girl giddiness at the vintage flash cards and letters at the front of the store - and made my way through the labyrinth of yummy smelling soaps, and passed the uber cute basket of "peeps" - i ended up chatting with your sweet employee - and just gushing over her with how wonderful I thought that the store was. i knew that the store had a "bloggers" touch to it - and quickly asked, "does the owner blog??????!" (disclaimer: i'm an avid blogger and designer...i think that we can smell each other from 1000 miles away! haha) to which your pixie haired blondie quickly threw one of your cards in my hand with a big smile, and we were out the door just in time for her to lock up.

fastforward: i find myself this week sifting through my dear friend's brand newly launched blog - OnceWed! emily is a dear friend and we have worked together on a few events in the past year or so - and I was just tickled to see the precious post that was written by a certain "Haylie Bird"...immediately tagging her onto my RSS feed, I've been following her for the past few days - only to read this morning that she posted about YOU and even used to work for you!!!! oh how the world is ever so small. :P

so needless to say - you are an amazing artist, and have the eye of a queen when it comes to merchandising. your store is so quaint and welcoming - yet impeccably clean and refreshing. thank you so much for bringing life to savannah and for bringing a certain loveliness. i know i'll be sticking around to watch as it grows more!

Initiatives to support local businesses gathering steam

If you're a retailer and your numbers are up over last year, congratulations. Keep doing whatever you're doing, but don't get complacent.

Anecdotally, most downtown retailers with whom I'm in regular contact have seen their sales numbers are down from last year, in some cases 30 percent or more.

That seems like a huge number, but it's consistent with the statewide retail environment as revealed by sales tax collections, which declined 24.5 percent in April compared with last year.

I've been pleasantly surprised by the resilience of some businesses that have hunkered down and seem poised to survive the recession and a potentially slow recovery.

But we're likely to be in a difficult environment for retailers for many months. (Six? 12? 20?)

So it's good to see that the Savannah Development and Renewal Authority is going to launch a local ad campaign to promote downtown business. More on that soon. And it's good to see that there are other initiatives across the country to encourage consumers to support small and locally owned businesses.

On her blog (www.vintage general.blogspot.com ), Liz Demos - owner of @home at 320 W. Broughton St. - recently wrote about the 3/50 Project (www.the350 project.net ), a grassroots movement to encourage consumers to spend more thoughtfully.

It's a simple idea: Choose the three independently owned stores that you would miss most if they closed and spend $50 in each over a period of time.

I've also noticed an uptick in the number of downtown residents who have been encouraging me to write about specific stores. (Three people have approached me independently in the past week or so to write again about Papillote, the French to-go bistro that opened earlier this year at 218 W. Broughton St.)

These trends obviously mirror the growing interest in locally harvested food that led to the creation this year of the Forsyth Farmers Market (www.forsythfarmersmarket.org) and the expanded hours at the Market at Trustees' Garden (www.trusteesmarket.com).

Perhaps this renewed interest in intentional spending and fostering locally owned businesses will prove to be the recession's silver lining.

One of my favorite customers has hired me to help her with a house flip. I get to make all the choices associated with a traditional remodel without the financial investment which is a strange feeling for this DIY girl.

It doesn't look like much right now but this little house is going to make the sweetest cottage for someone. It is full of potential. The new roof and exterior paint should be finished by the end of the week. Things are going at such a fast pace but I will try to post progress pictures from time to time. For now here are some before pictures. Can you say YIKES? At least the wood floors are pretty.

While roaming around online yesterday I discovered the most amazing movement and I wanted to share it with all the people I know in the hopes they will share it with all the people they know. This is especially important to me because I am independent retailer and it has been tough doing business during the economic slow down. I am not the only one. There are loads of amazing retailers out there with really great shops that would be missed if they disappeared. So pick 3, for me and keep the project and our futures going.

I spent the day with a photographer and a fellow recruit scouting locations for a big photo shoot I am art directing and styling in October.The place was filled with potential "perfect shots" so it will be tough to narrow the wish list down.I can't make this stuff up.It really is this beautiful! The best part, we will be staying there during the shoot. Not too sure we will get to enjoy any of the amenities because we will be working so I am thinking of booking some extra days just to take it easy with family.

News from the National Stationery Show: we made the most of seriously slim pickins. The show was about 40% filled compared to years past. The good stuff was really good and the bad stuff was really bad. Meg and me managed to find some nice new lines for the store and reordered from ones we already stock. My fave? Old Tom Foolery (image above). The best part of this show is actually meeting the designers of the line you are considering and in this case it was a super cute couple, he is a former copy writer and she is a former art director. His wicked sense of humor + her art direction = a winning combination. Look for it @home soon.

These are some of the shots I took while we were setting up the barn for Halli and Adam's wedding. We had a small army of family and friends lending a helping hand and we needed it! There were over a 1,000 feet of cafe lights, 100s of yards of yellow and muslin fabric, over 60 gigantic balloons, 28 tables & table covers, 180 chairs, 30 pine benches, 12 rocking chairs, 20 red & white tissue pinwheels, 40 lbs. of candy, 25 flower arrangements, 30 hay bales, miscellaneous wire baskets, jars and props from the store, a popcorn machine, a cotton candy machine, a kissing booth and a photo booth. Amazing!

The tour of homes is over (images soon) and Halli and Adam's wedding was yesterday (too busy to take pictures but I will track some down) so now I can rest a little and let life get back to normal. Both events went really well and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. The lovely gals from Country Living and two very cute photographers from Charleston captured the wedding for an upcoming feature in the magazine. Flattering for sure!

With all the craziness around here I forgot to share this little treasure that my friend Katie created. I saw it on her blog and scooped it up before she put it on her etsy site. She was kind enough to deliver it to my shop while she was in town a last week. I plan to give it special placement in the house for the SCAD Alumni Tour of Homes this weekend.

the madness begins

If you follow my blog you may have read a few months ago that I was putting together a tour of homes fundraiser for the SCAD Alumni Association. It is hard to believe but the tour takes place next weekend, May 8th and 9th. As a part of the event I have also agreed to have my home on the tour the first day. If you can imagine the work that goes into prepping your home for such an event you can then picture the turmoil my house and garden is currently in.

My husband tilled our back yard today in preparation for new sod (being delivered tomorrow), there are no cushions on my side chairs in the living room (they are at Satchel being slip covered), there are no windows or doors on my recently constructed greenhouse (they are in my husband's imagination, hopefully) and the list goes on. In fact the punch list for the house is 4 pages long. Most of it involves cleaning and propping but there is a good bit of hard labor too. I only have 2 days free from the shop until then so there will be many late nights ahead. Night time gardening is not out of the question either.

And did I mention that I am also planning a wedding for dear friend and former @home shop girl Halligan Norris? Yes, she is getting married the very weekend of the tour. My family likes to point out that I seem to commit to big stuff simultaneously. And just to keep things really interesting I submitted the wedding to a national magazine and they are coming to shoot it. Madness indeed! I thrive under pressure or so it seems.

What does all of this mean? Well the posts might get slim for a while unless I need to vent or share something monumental.

SCAD Sidewalk Arts Festival

For the first time since I graduated from SCAD in 1998 I had the Saturday of the SCAD Sidewalk Arts Festival off from the store. How appropriate since this was such a big anniversary for the college. It was beautiful sunny and warm day. We strolled through the park looking at the squares where students and alumni were drawing in chalk before the judging took place. My son enjoyed some of the games they provided, we got a bite to eat in the shade, met up with friends and then headed home to gather our things for the movie in the park last night.

The Sidewalk Arts Festival draws a large crowd and this year was no different. My favorite part was a Cirque de Soleil like parade of people dressed in white puffy costumes prancing through the park. I was told that this group had a similar performance at the SCAD Lacoste campus. The SCAD 30th Years bean bag toss game was very clever too and my husband and son managed to spin several of the dots in between throwing bean bags at each other.

The lovely Grace Bonney is getting married today in Savannah. I have had so many people ask me about Grace and the wedding that I have started to worry about random curiosity seekers. I hope that everyone is respectful and lets them enjoy their day alone with their family and friends. Grace is one of those really special people that is oblivious to her rock star status among design junkies. So I think it would surprise her to know all the wedding buzz out there. Fans of Grace & Design Sponge will be rewarded when their wedding appears on the pages of Martha Stewart Weddings so please avoid the temptation to hunt them down to see for yourself.

The Savannah College of Art and Design is celebrating it's 30th anniversary this year. Throughout the year, the college is showcasing people that have been impacted by the college in some way. As an alum of the college and now business and community member I see the tremendous contribution the college has made in my life and in Savannah.

Another honor was bestowed upon me yesterday. I was given a 2009 SCAD Alumni of the Year Excellence in Service award for my work on the Alumni Executive Board and my contribution to fundraising events for the Alumni Scholarship, including the upcoming SCAD Alumni Tour of Homes May 8th and 9th.

Spring brings many things to Savannah. The city is alive with tourists and tour goers. One of my favorite events in the Spring is the Savannah Garden Exposition. In years past (7 years to be exact) I help plan the expo and I was also an exhibitor. This year I decided to take a break. I was just an attendee and workshop participant. Because of my involvement I never really had the time to take it all in like a normal citizen. It was really nice to leisurely roam around and look at the open air market, the exhibition gardens, the window boxes and container gardens.

I attended a lecture and workshop with writer and horticulturalist Tovah Martin. She was promoting her most recent book The New Terrarium. I had emailed Tovah prior to the event with the hope that she would have time to visit my shop. To my surprise and delight she found time in her schedule to stop by on Thursday. I was so excited to meet Tovah in person and have one on one time with her. The lecture and workshop Friday was informative, funny and inspiring. I have been planting terrariums for many years, I even sold them in the store from time to time. I think it is always good to brush up on your skill set and get a different take on an old tradition. It was also interesting to hear the origins and history of the process. What I loved most was the variety of plants she suggested we experiment with. I had always assumed you should use tropical, shade loving varieties. That is not the case. I took lots mental notes and purchased a signed copy of her book for reference. If you live in a cold climate like Tovah terrariums are a nice way to introduce greenery into your home all year long.

I would also like to mention a vendor that had really cool things. Farmhouse 1807. I had read about this couple in one of my old Country Living magazines but didn't realize it until we started to talk about shows. I was digging around in their booth and discovered a fantastic wire display piece from an old store. I envisioned it all planted up with flowers or filled with stationery in the store. It is in my mobile storage unit (my truck) until I make a decision to keep it or sell it.

Just when I thought all hope of ever having another feature published in a major magazine had been dashed forever, I got the amazing news that not one but two features I submitted last week are being picked up. Yeah! One is a lovely house here in town and the other is Halligan and Adam's wedding in May. I am keeping the details to myself until it is all set in stone. I also spent the day with two photographers and their marketing person scouting locations for three produced wedding features for their portfolio. I don't want to get ahead of myself but it sounds like my freelance career is starting up again. Now if things could just pick up a little more at the shop....

boho magazine

I optimistically hit the news stand today and saw something I had never seen before. It was a new magazine (ok, it launched in August but it was new to me). Lately magazines have been folding left and right so it was a welcome sight. Boho Magazine is both beautiful and inspiring. The issue I purchased is their third so I plan to track down the first two soon. Their aesthetic fits the store perfectly so I am also going to figure out how to get them for the shop.

Their definition of a boho girl really hit home with me and I have no doubt it will hit home with many of you.

I am happy to report we are no longer out of the All Out Of grocery lists. We also received voucher booklets for friends, coworkers, lovers and new parents as well as, new sticky notes, the pro/con pad and slang flashcards.

The weatherman is reporting that our temperatures will fall to the low 30s tonight. I know it sounds like balmy weather to anyone over the Mason Dixon line but we live in the south for a reason. WARMTH! Even though the temperatures are falling Savannah is preparing for the hoards of tourists that descend on the city in late February and continue coming through the summer. Spring merchandise is already arriving at the shop and we have been rearranging the store in the hopes that this season will prove better than the last. Here is a peek at some of the new products. (Please excuse the cheesy styling, the photos came from one of my vendors not me.)

Just two-weeks after installing a new publisher in a last-ditch effort to save the magzaine, Conde Nast informed staffers Wednesday morning that the beloved shelter title Domino will fold.

my tiny greenhouse

Over the weekend my husband and son poured the footings for my new (old) greenhouse in the garden. I found the roof in Statesboro, GA. It is a recycled sky light from an old building so the dimensions are quite small but just enough for our little courtyard. We needed a place to store garden tools and plants when it gets cold (yes, on occasion it gets that cold). Our house is on tour in May and this is one of many little projects we are working on to get it spiffy in time.

goodbye country home

After a long day buying for the store at the Atlanta Gift Show I was checking my emails when I read in the subject line of one "Country Home Folds." The email was from a fellow freelancer letting me know that Country Home magazine was closing it's doors after 30 years. It all came as a big surprise to me and the staff. I had just received my field editor's newsletter. I was gearing up for a new year of projects and house scouting. At first I was in shock. I had been a reader of this magazine for close to 20 years myself so as a fan I was devastated. As a friend and colleague of some many at Meredith Publishing I was heart broken. What would all these people do? There were 40 people laid off at Country Home and an additional 210 throughout Meredith Publishing. The publishing world has taken quite a hit during these slow economic times. Cottage Living folded last month and Country Living is being re-organized so I don't think we have seen the last of it.

And what of the void in my life? I had the good forturne to have projects published in Country Home and they photographed my home last year for a feature. I can only hope it will end up in another Meredith publication. I will hold on to the contacts I still have at in the hope that some work may come my way this year.

It is a sad day for those of us that were faithful followers of the magazine. I looked to it for constant inspiration and ideas for my home and shop. Matthew Mead, stylist supreme, was a source of delight for me in each issue. Maybe when all the dust settles and the economy makes a turn for the better we will see some new comers to the publishing world. I can only hope to see some familiar faces when it does.
